The Elephant Man Homunculus
Popularly known as the "Elephant Man Homunculus" because of its long, trunk-like projection of neural tissue this plastinated preparation is the only known example of a brain homunculus surgically removed in vivo. Homunculi recovered post mortem are significantly ossified like their professorial donors.
Anatomically, EMH was removed by sectioning the brain stem below the cerebellar peduncle, reflected from fornix to peduncle, and plastinated as a flat sheet of tissue. The cerebellum has been removed and, as usual with such homunculi, most of the natural structures involved are obscured by the homunculus' own features. Anatomically, the following remain part intact: superior and inferior colliculi, trochlear nerve, 8th cranial nerve and peduncle.
Doubts remain as to the homunculus' independence of mind.
